Over 40 Years Of Experience
Innovative Millworks is a custom cabinetry fabricator that began as a personal dream in 2000 with a combined total of over 40 years of experience in general renovation and cabinetry fabrication. We started out as a subcontractor with Home Depot fabricating and installing residential kitchen and bath counter tops. With a desire to become more commercial focused, we soon acquired jobs from companies like JC Penny, Grand Traverse Mall, Wolverine Building, and the State of Michigan Department of Corrections Correctional Facilities Administration.
We are currently subcontracted with one of the nation’s leading airline facilities contractors. We have done work for Hyatt Regency Hotels, Virgin America Airlines, Air Tran, Air Canada, and currently, Jet Blue Airlines. Our work is displayed in places like, Hawaii, New York, Massachusetts, Florida, Utah, California, and the Virgin Islands. Our cabinetry and counter tops are fabricated and installed with a detailed craftmanship and pride not found in larger factories.
Meet David
David H. Smith II grew up in a family owned renovating business in the suburbs of Detroit, MI. Renovating businesses like BlockBuster Video and Mountain Jack restaurants, David not only learned how operate a business, he learned the value of innovative thinking and changing problems into solutions in the construction field. In his young twenties, he decided to take his own path in life and left his family’s business. He was quickly hired as a cabinet and countertop fabricator. With his experience and talent, it was not long before he was promoted to shop supervisor. It was only after the birth of his first daughter, that he and his bride decided to move to Traverse City, MI and make a fresh start. With 17 years’ experience under his belt, he started Innovative Millworks in May of 2000.
Meet Sarah
While raising their two daughters, Sarah Smith spent whatever free time she had working quietly in the background as administrator for Innovative Millworks. In the 22 years as a stay-at-home mom, she learned as much as possible about business administration. As a result of Sarah’s desire to learn, she became a member of BNI, the world’s largest networking group. Through her connections with BNI, she found the courage needed to confidently step into her role as VP/CEO/S/T and encourage the continued growth of Innovative Millworks. Sarah’s attention to detail has also put her working side-by-side with her husband performing shop duties as fabrication, painting, cleaning, and shipment preparations. One of her goals is to be able to give back to the community with the growth of the company.
With two young daughters and a mortgage payment, David H. Smith II took a leap of faith and began Innovative Millworks in May of 2000.
With his wife’s support, David began his journey in a small shop on the outskirts of Frankfort, MI. After putting in an eight hour day making counter tops and cabinetry for his day job, David would make the 45 minute drive from Traverse City, MI to Frankfort, MI to work on his company building jobs for Home Depot customers. Innovative Millworks quickly earned a reputation for quality work in a timely manner. Before long, Innovative Millworks quickly outgrew the humble shop and, eventually, moved into their current location in Traverse City doing jobs for companies like Jet Blue Airlines, Virgin Airlines, and Third Coast Chiropractic.

Innovative Millworks is a member of the Cabinet Makers Association (CMA) as well as Business Network International (BNI). We are certified in the fabrication and installation of laminate and solid surface from Corian®, Wilsonart®, Formica®, Avonite®, Pionite®, and Swan Surfaces®.
